Honda Insight Hybrid makes EU debut at the Geneva Motor Show

The new Insight, which will makes its European debut at the Show, has been designed to offer a practical five-seat family car at an affordable price with excellent fuel economy and low CO₂ and other emissions.

Honda's latest hybrid vehicle revives the Insight nameplate which was first used in 1999. It also marks a return for Honda to producing hybrids in a dedicated aerodynamic body, designed to optimize the performance of the efficient petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain.

The Insight combines an optimized 1.3 liter i-VTEC engine with a compact thin electric motor. The electric motor acts as a generator during deceleration, recovering energy that is otherwise lost as heat from the brakes. This energy is stored in the batteries and then used to support the combustion engine during acceleration to save fuel and increase efficiency.

The Insight has been designed to give good real world emission and fuel economy figures. Its key element is the Eco Assist system that is fitted as standard. The upper instrument cluster where the speedometer is sited, features a color changing ambient light that illuminates green when driving ecologically, blue/green when the car is being driven acceptably and blue when driving with less regard for economy.

Stoner launched his Ducati down the hill off the line into turn one pursued by Hayden and a fast-starting James Toseland (Yamaha). As the horde peeled into turn two Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V) ran wide, onto the grass, and down he went.

By mid-race distance Stoner had shed the attentions of the determined Hayden and began working his lead cushion from 2.6 seconds to the 7.9s lead he had at the flag. Nicky meanwhile had his work cut out fending off the hard-charging Rossi.

On the final lap Rossi dived past Hayden at turn one and Nicky tried all he could to get back on terms and stage a pass on the final lefts onto the start/finish straight where Hayden really hangs the back of his RCV out as he puts down the power. But it was not to be.

Dovizioso too was robbed on the final lap while holding fourth place. Lorenzo got the verdict for fourth when Toseland and Dovi tangled letting Nakano in for fifth at the same time. All Honda finishers were in the top ten, although not as high as Nicky and Dovi felt they could have been.

Weather played the ace hand here in rain-lashed Indianapolis. The 125cc Grand Prix was foreshortened, the 250cc race abandoned altogether and this, the main event, brought to a close when the prevailing conditions – furious rain and wind – proved too much for both riders and track furniture.

The race was declared ‘wet’ before it got underway and right enough the declaration proved appropriate. Conditions were manageable for the first 11 laps until the rain fell harder, the wind got up with a vengeance, and then a howling gale blew the conclusion of this contest into the hands of the race organizers.

Pedrosa Fights To Fourth at San Marino GP

Misano, August 31, 2008 - Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda RC212V) finished a gallant fourth after leaving the line in superb style to lie second into turn one behind Stoner. But the Spanish star could not maintain the pace of the eventual podium men, and despite a gutsy bid for third in the closing stages, he finished 17 seconds behind the winner.

Dani was hanging on gamely however and it looked as if the Honda man was back to form after his German crash and the disappointment of missing out on riding at Laguna Seca. But Dani couldn’t quite hang in there and as Rossi passed him early on, then Lorenzo and Elias on lap five, he had to make do with holding onto fourth.

Stoner flew in the early laps building a 3.3 second lead after only three tours of the 4.226km circuit and looked untouchable. Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda RC212V) made a good launch too and lay fourth on lap one – until he fell, not even completing the opening lap. He crashed here on lap one in 2007 too.

Rossi now has 262 points, Stoner 187, Pedrosa 185 and Lorenzo 140. Rossi’s 75 point lead with five races to run is to all intents and purposes almost unassailable, but so long as mathematical chances remain, his four rivals will ride as fiercely as ever.

Thanks to a placement deal with Warner Brothers, looks like the "Mach 5" will be racing an actual racing team from Japan in the up coming Speed Racer movie. The team I am talking about is a very well known Japanese team called "Autobacs Racing Team Aguri" or "ARTA" for short, that participates in the Japanese Super GT series (and might I add is the 2007 team and driver champion in the GT500 class) with their ASL Garaiya machine. You might also already guessed from the name of the team that it is the same Aguri in the F1 "Super Aguri".

The futuristic machine that will be appearing in the movie was unveiled to the Japanese press in the current Tokyo Auto Salon, complete with the actual team number and color scheme of the ARTA's Super GT 300 machine.

Powertrain

An all-aluminum DOHC i-VTEC® in-line 4-cylinder engine heralds a pair of firsts for the TSX model, including dual balance shafts and a direct ignition system. Along with improved performance, it is also cleaner as it now meeting the EPA's aggressive Tier 2-Bin 5 and CARB LEV II Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) standards for the first time in TSX history.

Displacing 2.4-liters and producing 201 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque (with manual transmission), the new in-line 4-cylinder engine produces its useable power across a much wider rpm range, while five percent more torque further strengthens the engine's pulling power at middle rpm levels. This allows the 2009 Acura TSX to be more responsive off the line and out of corners, and stronger in the middle of the rpm range where the engine operates most of the time.

This newfound performance and flexibility is due in part to a higher compression ratio, revised valve timing, and improved intake and exhaust gas flow. Further credit goes to the TSX engine's i-VTEC® "intelligent" valve control system, which provides the power characteristics of a V-6 without sacrificing the light weight or fuel efficiency of an in-line four. Likewise, a new rear-mounted exhaust manifold layout, a close-coupled catalytic converter design, and a Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) system substantially reduce emissions levels. Estimated fuel mileage is 21/30/24 mpg* (city/highway/combined, 5 AT) and 20/28/23 mpg* (city/highway/combined, 6 MT).

Two transmissions are available, both as standard equipment - a 6-speed close-ratio manual with new performance-oriented ratios for Second through Sixth gears, and a Sequential SportShift 5-speed automatic with a new lock-up torque converter assembly. The manual transmission features a short-throw shifter with a precise, light action that makes it highly rewarding to use, while the Sequential SportShift automatic permits fully automatic operation with intelligent features such as Grade Logic Control and Shift Hold Control, which make driving the TSX on hilly or winding roads more enjoyable. If the driver desires, the automatic transmission can also be operated manually via new steering-wheel mounted F1®-style paddle shifters.

Body and Chassis

The 2009 TSX body structure includes two firsts for the Acura division, including a closed-channel cross-braced roof structure and inside frame rails. Along with a stronger rear bulkhead, the closed-channel cross-braced roof structure yields a more rigid and vibration-resistant structure. The first use of inside frame rails for any Acura model help tailor the aerodynamics underneath the car for improved fuel economy, lower emissions and reduced noise. In addition, new A-, B- and C-pillar separators improve the TSX's quietness over rough roads and at high speed. Slippery aerodynamics also helps fuel economy as well as high-speed stability - all while lowering emissions.

In addition to its 3.0-inch greater width and 2.6-inch wider track, the 2009 TSX has a 1.3-inch longer wheelbase and 2.4 inches more overall length. These dimensions combine to provide greater interior roominess, more agile handling and improved ride quality. Another first for Acura are the TSX's new dual-mode suspension dampers, which provide superior suspension damping characteristics at both lower and higher damper speeds. Using a unique deflector plate stack, the new dampers adjust compression damping characteristics to suit the vehicle speed, cornering forces and road surface.

In creating the second-generation TSX body design, Acura designers sought to retain the crisp, dynamic design of the original and enhance it by widening the body overall and adding more muscular and distinctive cues to create a keen-edged sports sedan. Their key design goal was to create an aerodynamic design that evokes both emotion and tension with a decisively sporty flair.

Outward visibility is improved with a slimmer A-pillar design, while an auto up/down front passenger window adds convenience and a reverse-linked passenger-side door mirror tilts down to help improve safety while parallel parking. The new TSX also has a wider trunk opening and a lower trunk lift-over height for more convenient loading.

Exterior/Interior

Functionality and refinement converge with luxury and style in the interior of the 2009 Acura TSX. Featuring a blend of sweeping, contemporary shapes, a high level of standard comfort and convenience features, widespread use of premium materials and an available Technology Package, this 5-passenger sports sedan offers the upscale modern interior that customers have come to expect from Acura.

From the precision-crafted metal door sills to the satin-metal finish accents, from new leather-covered seats to the steering-wheel mounted controls, and from the premium 7-speaker sound system to the dual-zone automatic climate control, the TSX represents a merge of intelligent design and innovation. For example, Bluetooth® connectivity is standard and includes a HandsFreeLink® cellular telephone interface that makes communications easier and safer while en route.

The 2009 Acura TSX leads the way in safety with its new Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. Honda Sport : V4 revival in 2008-2009!

The 2008 Honda VFR1000 may look something like this...

According to Spanish website Solomoto, we may see a resurgence of Honda’s legendary V4-powered bikes over the next two years. While the 1980s and 90s V4 Honda RC30 and RC45 are considered to be all-time performance bike greats, the current VFR800 sports-tourer simply isn’t in the same league. Its variable-valve-timing (VTEC) system has been criticized for its erratic performance, and the bike has steadily lost ground to newer, more sophisticated rivals.

Honda are now expected to build a non-VTEC, 1000cc V4 which will power their new VFR1000 sports-tourer. And unlike the existing VFR800, the new bike is likely to have USD forks at front, Honda’s Unit ProLink system at the back, and radially-mounted brakes with ABS.

Could this, the 2008 Fireblade, be the last CBR1000RR before an all-new RVF1000 takes over in 2009...?

Solomoto even say that the Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade may give way to an all-new RVF1000 by 2009. Instead of the Fireblade’s inline-four, the RVF1000 will use a 200bhp, 1000cc V4 and styling would mirror Honda’s MotoGP bikes. With Aprilia also working on their own 1,000cc V-four engine, which they claim will make more than 210 horsepower in race trim, maybe the V4 config is getting all set to make a big comeback. Should be worth waiting for!

REPSOL HONDA MEN COMPLETE WINTER TESTING AT QATAR

Repsol Honda riders Nicky Hayden and Dani Pedrosa completed their winter testing programmes at Losail at midnight tonight. After acclimatising to riding under floodlights yesterday evening, the pair continued working at getting the best out of their RC212Vs in these very different conditions.

Hayden is now raring to go racing after a busy few weeks of testing in Asia, Australia, Europe and here in the Middle East. Pedrosa’ right-hand injury is slightly better than it was at Jerez two weeks ago, allowing him to spend more time on the track, but the Spaniard certainly won’t be at full strength for next weekend’s season-opening Qatar GP.

Practice for the 2008 Qatar MotoGP event, the first GP to be staged in the dark, begins at 7pm on Friday March 7. Qualifying takes place at 10.55pm on March 8, with the race at 11pm on March 9.

"I’ve enjoyed riding at night but conditions are not easy here at night – there’s the wind and the track temperature changes a lot. We tried race tyres tonight and at the end we tried a couple of qualifiers, we went quicker but we’re not where we need to be. We left Jerez feeling really confident but we’ve been brought back to reality. Nonetheless I’m happy to go racing after so much testing, that’s exciting. Now we’ve got some work to do, we need to try to come up with something to make an improvement. I think we can get the bike to hold the line better and finish the corner better. Now Honda have got a couple of days to think about stuff and I’ve got some time to go over some lines, so hopefully come Friday night we’ll be closer to where we need to be”.

Dani Pedrosa –fastest lap: 1m 56.704s (lap 38 of 75)

“It’s been quite a difficult two days here. So far we haven't found the solution to the problems we are having. We’ve tried many different things but at the moment we aren’t getting the results we were expecting. The main problem is grip. The tyres are fine, you can see that because the guys with the 2007 Hondas and Michelins are fast, so it’s something else. Maybe riding at night has some influence on this, because there’s a lot of humidity, but that’s the same for everybody. My right hand is little bit better, I had some time to rest it after Jerez, so here I’ve been able to ride more laps than I could manage at Jerez”.
